Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado was recently awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of her long struggle for a just democratic transition in Venezuela and free elections. However, the surprise announcement came when the Norwegian Peace Council announced the official cancellation of the award ceremony.
The council explained in a statement that the decision does not cancel the prize itself, which remains valid and recognized, but rather suspends the public celebration because the prize is no longer compatible with the institution's values, according to council president Ellen Lorentzen, adding that the decision is difficult but necessary.
The Argentine newspaper Infobae reported that the statement affirmed that the council seeks to remain faithful to the fundamental principles of the peace movement represented by the prize, emphasizing the importance of continuing to support dialogue, disarmament, and the peaceful resolution of conflicts at the international level.
