HBO has greenlit a second season of its upcoming “Harry Potter” series, which releases its first season this Christmas.
The announcement aligns with the network’s plan to adapt all seven of J.K. Rowling’s “Harry Potter” books into seven seasons of television over the course of a decade.
Season 2, which will be based on the book “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets,” will begin principal photography this fall.
Jon Brown, a writer on the first season of the adaptation, has been promoted to serve as a co-showrunner on Season 2. He joins the current showrunner, Francesca Gardiner.
Titled “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” — based on the first “Harry Potter” book’s title — Season 1 begins with Harry’s (Dominic McLaughlin) 11th birthday, when he receives a letter of admittance to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, which opens up a new world for him and also forcing him to face a dangerous enemy from his past.
Dominic McLaughlin stars as the titular boy who lived, Harry Potter, Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, and Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger.
The ensemble cast also includes John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch, Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell, Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy, Bel Powley and Daniel Rigby as Petunia and Vernon Dursley, and Katherine Parkinson as Molly Weasley.
Gardiner serves as executive producer alongside director Mark Mylod; Rowling; Neil Blair and Ruth Kenley-Letts of Brontë Film and TV; and David Heyman of Heyday Films. Warner Bros. Television is the studio.
