Halsey gets candid about battling serious health issues, life and death in her new emotional acoustic single, “The End.”
The Grammy-nominated singer, whose real name is Ashley Nicolette Frangipane, shared a series of videos on Instagram Tuesday to document her medical treatments over an unknown period of time. Her specific diagnosis was not immediately clear.
“I feel like an old lady,” Halsey said in the first clip while rubbing her legs in apparent pain. “I told myself I’m giving myself two more years to be sick. At 30, I’m having a rebirth and I’m not gonna be sick and I’m gonna look super hot and have lots of energy and I’m just gonna get to re-do my 20s in my 30s.”
The “Without Me” singer also released a new song, an acoustic ballad titled “The End” and announced her upcoming fourth studio album, a follow-up to 2021’s "If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power".
“Long story short, I’m lucky to be alive,” the singer-songwriter wrote in the caption. “Short story long, I wrote an album.”
The fifth album will be released under Columbia Records, with whom she signed last year after parting ways with her longtime label, Capitol Music Group.
“The End” was written by Halsey and produced by Halsey, Alex G, and Michael Uzowuru (Frank Ocean, Rosalía, SZA and Kevin Abstract).
The lyrics of “The End” tackle similar grievances: “Every couple of years now, a doctor says I’m sick / Pulls out a brand new bag of tricks / And then they lay it on me / And at first, it was my brain, then a skeleton in pain / And I don’t like to complain, but I’m saying sorry.”
Halsey will donate proceeds from her latest single to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and the Lupus Research Alliance.
The “Bad At Love” singer previously revealed on Instagram in May 2022 that she had been diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, Sjogren’s syndrome, mast cell activation syndrome, known as MCAS, and postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, known as POTS.
Halsey has also been open on social media about her struggle with endometriosis.
