The United Kingdom (UK) and the European Union (EU) are on the brink of a trade war after Brussels, the headquarter of the EU, accused British Prime Minister Boris Johnson of lacking sincerity in negotiations on Northern Ireland's future.
The EU had warned of "serious consequences" if 10 Downing Street – the headquarter of the British Cabinet - suspended a deal regarding Post-Brexit Britain from the European Union.
After emerging from his latest tense meeting with the British minister on the "Brexit" file, the newspaper quoted European Union Commissioner Maros Ševović as saying that despite Brussels' attempts to reach a compromise, the EU has seen no movement whatsoever on the part of the United Kingdom.
The UK and EU are locked in three weeks of futile talks about changes to how the Brexit deal works to ensure the free flow of trade between Britain and Northern Ireland.
The European Union has offered to halve customs controls and health checks on animal and plant products destined for supermarkets by 80%, but Ševović noted that there has been little effort made by David Frost, the British Brexit minister, to deal with the proposals.
"I find this disappointing and once again I urge the UK government to deal with us honestly," Ševović said.
He added that from this perspective, he sees the next week as important as we must focus all efforts on finding a solution as quickly as possible.
He went on to say that the goal of the EU should be to stabilize Northern Ireland.
He warned that the EU officials hear a lot about Article 16 at the moment, but there would be no doubt that moving Article 16 to seek to negotiate the protocol would have dire consequences.
