ABC has renewed “Grey’s Anatomy” for its 23rd season, becoming the longest running primetime medical drama on television.

In 2025, the series, which was created by Shonda Rhimes and debuted 2005, was the No. 1 most-streamed series across Disney+ and Hulu, and Nielsen recorded it as the No. 2 most-streamed series in the U.S. across all platforms.

“Grey’s Anatomy” stars Ellen Pompeo as Meredith Grey; Meredith was the show’s central character until Pompeo took a step back during Season 19, though she continues her work as show’s narrator, makes on-screen guest appearances and serves as an executive producer.

The series has had many actors come and go from major roles over the years, with current stars including Chandra Wilson as Miranda Bailey, James Pickens Jr. as Richard Webber, Camilla Luddington as Jo Wilson, Caterina Scorsone as Amelia Shepherd, Jason George as Ben Warren, Chris Carmack as Atticus Lincoln, Anthony Hill as Winston Ndugu, Alexis Floyd as Simone Griffith, Harry Shum Jr. as Benson Kwan, Adelaide Kane as Jules Millin, Midori Francis as Mika Yasusa, Niko Terho as Lucas Adams, and Trevor Jackson as Wes Bryant.

Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver were recently announced to be exiting from the roles of Owen Hunt and Teddy Altman, respectively, after the upcoming Season 22 finale.

The Season 23 renewal makes “Grey’s Anatomy” part of a 2026-2027 lineup for ABC that includes Season 10 of “9-1-1,” Season 2 of “9-1-1: Nashville,” Season 6 of “Abbott Elementary” and Season 3 of “High Potential.”
