Johannes Ebert, Secretary General of the Goethe-Institut, will pay an official three-day visit to Cairo from October 23 to 25, 2025.

The visit focuses on strengthening educational cooperation between Egypt and Germany, exploring employment opportunities for skilled professionals in Germany, and enhancing cultural exchange between the two countries.

The program includes a series of key meetings and visits, most notably Ebert’s meeting with Mohamed Abdel Latif, Egypt’s Minister of Education.

The discussions aim to explore new initiatives for promoting the German language in Egyptian curricula and strengthening existing educational partnerships.

Special attention will be given to vocational and language training programs that prepare young Egyptians for the German job market, where proficiency in German remains a vital competitive advantage.

As part of the visit, Johannes Ebert will also meet with groups of young learners studying the German language.

These encounters aim to inspire students, highlight the importance of linguistic and cultural competence, and open new horizons for mobility and employment in an increasingly globalized world.

Ebert’s program further includes engagements with key figures from Egypt’s vibrant cultural scene to discuss current developments and challenges.

He will also attend the Downtown Contemporary Arts Festival (D-CAF), which showcases diverse international performances in contemporary art and culture.

The Goethe-Institut is among the cultural partners supporting selected performances in this year’s edition.

This visit underscores the longstanding and dynamic partnership between the Goethe-Institut and its Egyptian counterparts in the fields of education, language, and culture.

Ebert has served as Secretary General and Chairman of the Board of the Goethe-Institut since 2012.

He studied Islamic Studies and Political Science in Freiburg and Damascus, later training in journalism in Heilbronn. Ebert held numerous roles within the Goethe-Institut, including Lecturer in Prien, Language Course Consultant in Riga, and Deputy Head of Public Relations in Munich.

He went on to direct the Goethe-Institut in Kyiv (1997–2002), Cairo and the North Africa/Middle East region (2002–2007), and later Moscow and the Eastern Europe/Central Asia region (2007–2012).

Throughout his career, Ebert has focused on strengthening the Goethe-Institut’s engagement in regions undergoing crisis or transformation, such as Ukraine, North Africa, and the Middle East.

He is committed to deepening European cooperation, advancing international cultural relations, and promoting digital transformation, sustainability, and innovation in cultural and educational policy.

Since 2022, he has been leading the Goethe-Institut through a comprehensive phase of institutional transformation.
