Shanghai International Studies University (SISU) has officially announced that it will award an honorary doctorate to the world-renowned Egyptian archaeologist, Dr. Zahi Hawass. The prestigious degree will be conferred during a grand ceremony scheduled for March 2025.

This recognition comes as part of a broader initiative to strengthen international academic ties. The announcement coincides with a new partnership and academic cooperation agreement between SISU and Egypt’s Newgiza University (NGU). Dr. Hawass, who serves as a member of the Board of Trustees at NGU, has played a pivotal role in fostering cultural and archaeological bridges between the two institutions.

A Rigorous Selection Process

The university emphasized that the selection of Dr. Hawass followed a strict academic protocol. Candidates are nominated by the University Council and then evaluated by an international panel of four specialized professors from four different countries.

The experts reached a consensus that Dr. Hawass is the most influential Egyptologist today, citing his global fame and extraordinary contributions to uncovering the secrets of ancient Egyptian civilization.

A Historic Milestone

Following the official resolution, the university dispatched a formal invitation to Dr. Hawass, who signed his acceptance of the degree today.

With this latest accolade, Dr. Hawass’s tally rises to 13 honorary doctorates from 13 different nations. This achievement marks him as the only Egyptian archaeologist to receive such an extensive number of prestigious global academic honors.
