English Filmmaker Ridley Scott shared a new update on the highly-anticipated sequel to his 2000 historic epic movie “Gladiator“.

In 2018, it was announced that Scott was planning to direct a follow-up to the war movie.

In a statement, Scott shared that the sequel has been written, noting: "We have a good footprint, a good, logical place to go. You can't just do another Gladiator-type movie. You’ve got to follow… there are enough components from the first one to pick up the ball and continue it,".

The follow-up is set to enter production after Scott's next movie "Kitbag".

"Kitbag" is centered around Napoleon Bonaparte, with Joaquin Phoenix taking on the role of the French leader.

Peter Craig has written the sequel, which is expected to focus on Lucius, the son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen) in the original. The role was played by Spencer Treat Clark in the 2000 movie.

"Gladiator 2" is described by producers as a “legitimate” follow-up. It will take place in a 25-30 year time jump and will feature Russell Crowe, who portrayed Maximus, despite his death at the end of the original.

Speculation surrounding a sequel has risen ever since the movie was released. It was a critical and commercial hit, earning $460m globally and earning five Oscars.
