Get to Know Top Google Searched Topics in 2023

Google, the giant search engine, released the top searched words and topics for 2023, CNN reported on Monday.

The released data indicated that people around the world strongly searched for more information and news about the War in Gaza and the events of October 7.

“War in Israel and Gaza” topped this year’s list of news trends in the US and globally, followed by questions about Hamas, War in Gaza, Israel, and Palestine were among the year’s top US searches that began with “what is” or “why.”

The news of the missing submarine Titan, and the news of its implosion followed the searches related to war in Gaza, followed by the destructive Turkey-Syria earthquake.

The searches also include Damar Hamlin’s cardiac arrest during an NFL game, the death of “Friends” star Matthew Perry, and “Barbenheimer” which is the box-office fight between Oppenheimer and Barbie.

More names were featured this year like Actor Jeremy Renner, who suffered a near-fatal accident, influencer Andrew Tate; French football star Kylian Mbappé and Kansas City Chiefs football player Travis Kelce, who shared a romance with Taylor Swift.

Google’s list also highlighted some of the passings for this year, like Perry, Tina Turner, and Sinead O’Connor.

“Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” were the year’s top trending movies, followed by Bollywood's “Jawan,” crime thriller “Sound of Freedom” and “John Wick: Chapter 4.” “The Last of Us,” “Wednesday” and “Ginny and Georgia,” headed the list of trending TV shows. 

Japanese duo Yoasobi’s track “Idol (アイドル)” and Jason Aldean’s “Try That in a Small Town” led the list of the songs.

This year’s search trends also revealed shifts in language as “Rizz,” the 2023 Oxford word of the year was the top search inquiry for slang definitions. The category also included “it’s giving,” “cringe” and “no printer.”
