Germany Blocks Mass Cancellation of Afghan Resettlement

Germany's highest court has ruled that the government cannot collectively cancel Afghan resettlement commitments, saying each case must be assessed individually.

The Constitutional Court upheld a complaint filed by an Afghan woman and her two children, who were accepted for resettlement under a humanitarian program introduced after the Taliban returned to power in 2021.

Judges said the Interior Ministry's 2025 decision to revoke around 640 resettlement commitments without individual reviews violated Germany's constitutional ban on arbitrary state action.

The court also ordered the government to continue supporting the family, who are currently living in Pakistan with German-funded assistance, until visas are issued or a new decision is made in line with constitutional requirements.
