The release date for Gerard Butler's action movie "Kandahar" has been revealed.
The movie is set to premiere on May 26, Memorial Day weekend.
"Kandahar" joins other big theatrical titles over the four-day holiday like Disney’s "The Little Mermaid", Lionsgate’s Sebastian Maniscalco-Robert De Niro movie "About My Father", and Sony’s action comedy "The Machine".
Filmmaker Ric Roman Waugh directed the movie from a script he co-wrote alongside Mitchell LaFortune and Waugh.
"Kandahar" follows Tom Harris (Butler) who is an undercover CIA operative stuck deep in hostile territory in Afghanistan. After his mission is exposed, he must fight his way out, alongside his Afghan translator, to an extraction point in Kandahar all whilst avoide elite enemy forces and foreign spies tasked with hunting them down.
Navid Negahban, Ali Fazal, Travis Fimmel and Elnaaz Norouzi also star.
Basil Iwanyk, Brendon Boyea, Erica Lee, Butler, Alan Siegel, Christian Mercuri, Ali Jaafar, and Scott LaStaiti produce.
Open Road picked up Kandahar in an eight-figure deal in the low teens in September.
Butler can currently be seen in the action movie "Plane" from Lionsgate. It is in its second week and has grossed $20.7 million stateside to date.
