A ferry carrying 116 passengers and crew capsized off the coast of Guyana late Saturday, triggering a major search and rescue operation, according to authorities.
Prime Minister Mark Phillips said 53 people had been rescued after emergency teams responded to a distress call from the MV Barima late on 18 July.
Public Works Minister Juan Edghill said the ferry departed Georgetown for Port Kaituma at 3:15 p.m. local time before issuing a distress signal at around 11:00 p.m.
Search and rescue efforts remain underway as authorities continue to account for those on board.
