The Assistant Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization, Abdel Hakim Al-Waer, said on Tuesday that the food security situation in Sudan is very worrying.
According to Sky News, Abdel Hakim Al-Waer said: "According to the Integrated Food Insecurity Phase Analysis (FIES), more than half of the population of Sudan is in a state of crisis, emergency, or catastrophe."
The UN official explained that 25 million Sudanese are in the third phase, which is a very worrying phase - the food security phase - while 8.5 million are in the fourth phase - disaster and emergency - as well as about one million people in the crisis phase - acute food insecurity.
Al-Waer attributes the worsening of the food crisis in Sudan to the spread of the conflict, in addition to the increase in heavy rains this season, which caused an increase in the rate of floods, which made access to many areas very difficult or almost impossible.
