The European Union has officially welcomed the inaugural session of Syria's newly formed People's Assembly, calling the convention a significant milestone in the country's ongoing political transition.

In a formal statement issued by EU High Representative Kaja Kallas, the bloc emphasized that the newly convened legislative body is expected to play a crucial role in addressing the legitimate aspirations of all sectors of Syrian society.

The EU noted that the success of this transition relies heavily on the parliament's ability to foster an inclusive political system grounded in pluralism, transparent elections, and the rule of law.

The statement underscored key expectations for the People's Assembly, including its mandate to draft and adopt a new constitution, implement vital legislative reforms, and build representative public institutions that advance transitional justice and national reconciliation.

Reaffirming its commitment to a peaceful and stable Syrian transition, the EU declared its readiness—alongside member states—to engage directly with the People’s Assembly.

This support includes backing capacity building, assisting with good governance, and working towards the full reintegration of Syria into the Euro-Mediterranean space and global trade networks. The 210-member Syrian parliament held its historic first session in Damascus on Sunday, July 12, 2026, marking a key phase in establishing state institutions following the ouster of the former regime in late 2024.
