Algeria’s civil protection units are on high alert after responding to 111 distinct wildfires across several provinces within a 24-hour window. The sudden surge in blazes has forced emergency services to deploy massive resources to contain the threat and protect residential areas.

According to official reports from the Algerian Civil Protection Directorate, firefighting teams, supported by specialized forest conservation units and aerial water bombers, have been working around the clock. The provinces of Tizi Ouzou, Bejaia, and Jijel—regions historically vulnerable to summer wildfires due to dense vegetation and rugged terrain—are among the hardest hit.

The rapid spread of the fires has been fueled by a punishing heatwave, with temperatures climbing past 40°C (104°F), coupled with strong, dry winds.

Emergency services have successfully contained a majority of the outbreaks, preventing them from reaching populated villages. However, monitoring operations remain active to prevent any reignition in volatile zones. Local authorities have urged citizens, particularly those living near forested areas, to exercise extreme caution, avoid clearing land with fire, and immediately report any signs of smoke.

As climate patterns continue to bring record-breaking summer temperatures to North Africa, Algeria has stepped up its disaster preparedness, acquiring new firefighting aircraft and expanding its early-warning networks to mitigate the annual threat of forest fires.
