The European Union has fined Google a total of €890 million ($1 billion) for breaching its digital competition rules, in a move that could heighten tensions with the US.

The European Commission imposed a €460 million fine after finding that Google unlawfully favored its own services, including Google Flights and Google Hotels, over rival platforms in search results.

A further €430 million penalty was issued because Google failed to allow app developers to promote alternative offers to consumers outside its Google Play store free of charge.

The latest sanctions are part of the EU's broader effort to enforce its digital regulations and curb anti-competitive practices among major technology companies.
