The European Union has fined AliExpress €550 million for failing to prevent the sale of illegal products, including unsafe toys and cosmetics, marking the largest penalty issued under the Digital Services Act (DSA).
The fine follows an investigation launched in March 2024, which found the platform continued to list counterfeit and non-compliant products even after they had been identified as violating EU safety and environmental standards.
The European Commission said AliExpress failed to take adequate action to remove illegal listings, while its recommendation algorithms continued promoting many of the products and some offending sellers remained active on the platform.
AliExpress rejected the penalty, calling it disproportionate and saying it had made significant improvements to its compliance systems. The company added that it is considering its legal options.
The DSA requires major online platforms to assess and mitigate risks to consumers, as the EU steps up oversight of large technology and e-commerce companies.
