American actress Emma Stone will reprise her role as the iconic Disney villain, Cruella de Vil, after closing a deal to star in the upcoming “Cruella 2”.
News of the sequel’s development broke in early June, a few weeks after the live-action prequel to the Disney animated classic “101 Dalmations” premiered in theaters and on Disney+ PVOD tier on May 26, earning more than $222 million in worldwide ticket sales.
At the time, “Cruella” director Craig Gillespie and screenwriter Tony McNamara were both expected to return for the sequel, but a deal was not yet done for Stone.
Stone starred in the title role and executive produced the movie, the third live-action adaptation of the animated classic, following two movies by Glenn Close as the Disney villain.
“Cruella” also starred Emma Thompson, Paul Walter Hauser, and Kirby Howell-Baptiste.
The new agreement comes on the heels of Scarlett Johansson’s breach of contract suit against Disney over the company’s decision to release “Black Widow” simultaneously on Disney + and in theaters.
