Eminem is gearing up to release his highly-anticipated album “The Death of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce)” on July 12.
In a preview for the album shared by the rapper on social media, a woman gives birth to a baby in a not-exactly-warm welcome to the world. As the mother holds the child, it opens its black eyes and cracks a sinister smile as horns emerge from its head.
The announcement comes just ahead of the release of the project’s second single “Tobey,” featuring Big Sean and Babytron.
The song, which drops on July 2, will be accompanied by a Cole Bennett-directed video and is likely a reference to Spider-Man’s Tobey Maguire based on a lyric from that song’s teaser.
Eminem has been on somewhat of a nostalgia kick in the rollout for “The Death of Slim Shady” with the release a few weeks back of “Houdini,” a callback to his 2002 single “Without Me,” right down the music video where he’s dressed like a superhero navigating a comic strip world.
He announced “The Death of Slim Shady” during the NFL Draft in April with a Detroit Murder Files crime show teaser.
The rapper hinted that the project would be framed around the demise of his classic alter ego. He later ran an obituary in the Detroit Free Press saying farewell to Slim Shady.
Little is known about “The Death of Slim Shady,” as Eminem has been coy about details. Beyond the two singles, “The Death of Slim Shady” is likely to include production from Dr. Dre after the legendary musician revealed that he contributed to the project. To announce “Houdini,” he tapped magician David Blaine for a FaceTime video he posted on social media.
