El Hanager Theater to Screen ‘The Russian Ark’

The Cairo Film Society, headed by cinematographer Mahmoud Abdel Samie, and the Russian House in Cairo will screen “The Russian Ark” film (2002) on Saturday.

Directed by Alexander Sokurov who is one of the renowned contemporary Russian directors, the film participated at the Cannes Film Festival in 2002 and won the Visions Award at Toronto International Film Festival.

Sokurov’s films have been screened in various prestigious international film festivals such as Cannes Film Festival, Berlin International Film Festival, and Vince Film Festival. In addition, he was the head of the official competition jury at Cairo International Film Festival in 2020.

The events of the film revolve at St. Petersburg’s Winter Palace and Hermitage Museum where the audience can see several world-famed paintings and statues, and they can watch several shots for different time periods from Russia’s history, and each period is represented in one of the place’s rooms. For example, Peter the Great appeared while punishing one of the leaders, on the other hand, Catherine the Great appeared while searching for a comfortable place between the rooms, and the open-aired hall despite the cold weather and the falling snow.

Furthermore, Tsar Nicholas I was featured while receiving a delegation from the Shah of Iran for the death of a Russian diplomat, while Tsar Nicholas II – the last emperor of Russia, appeared while having a meal with his children.

Finally, a scene for the museum’s head and his some while discussing the importance of restoring the museum, and some scene for carpenters while making coffins for the killed during World War II.

Murad Gatin, director of the cultural center in Egypt, welcomed the continued cooperation with the Cairo Film Society, adding that there are two film screenings scheduled for the Russian House instead of one event in March. Therefore, Abdel Samie expressed his thanks to Gatin, praising the coordination between the two institutions.

The film will be hosted by the Deputy Head of the Cairo Film Festival and the coordinator of the cultural activity at the Russian House Sherif Gad, in addition, the event will see a tribute to the former General Secretary of the Cairo Film Society Abdel Moatie Mohamed due to medical complications, and Abdel Samie will honour the late official’s family an honorary membership at the institution.
