Dr. Vadim Zaychikov, Director of Russian Cultural Centers in Egypt, inaugurated a documentary art exhibition titled “Double Portrait Against the Background of the Century”, organized by the Russian National Museum of Music, celebrating two of the greatest composers of 20th-century classical music: Sergei Prokofiev and Dmitri Shostakovich.

The exhibition features a rare collection of original handwritten manuscripts, historical photographs, printed musical editions, and concert programs documenting the composers’ journeys in developing their distinctive artistic styles. Visitors can also enjoy an interactive experience through QR codes that provide access to some of their most famous musical works.

The exhibition highlights major compositions created during World War II, including Prokofiev’s Fifth Symphony and opera “War and Peace,” as well as Shostakovich’s Seventh Symphony “Leningrad” and Eighth Symphony. These works reflected the tragedies of war, the spirit of resilience, and hopes for peace, becoming part of the world’s musical heritage.

The opening ceremony featured a special performance by three Cairo Conservatory students: Gina Samer on violin, Mohamed El-Sayed on cello, and Andrew Philip on piano. They performed selected pieces by the two Russian composers, receiving great appreciation from the audience for their outstanding artistic level.

Mohamed El-Basousi, President of the Hurghada Youth Cinema Festival, praised the young musicians’ performance, stressing that Russian-Egyptian cooperation was not limited to industry but also extended to culture and the arts, creating strong creative bridges between the two nations.

The exhibition is part of efforts to strengthen cultural exchange between Egypt and Russia and introduce Egyptian audiences to a global musical legacy that continues to be performed in opera houses and studied in music academies worldwide.

At the end of the celebration, the Russian House honored the Cairo Conservatory students with certificates of appreciation for their remarkable performance and their role in showcasing the creativity of Egyptian youth.
