UNESCO has officially inscribed “Koshary, daily life dish and practices associated with it” from Egypt onto the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The decision was made during the 20th session of the Intergovernmental Committee in New Delhi.
Egyptian Minister of Culture, Dr. Ahmed Fouad Heno, hailed the inscription as a new confirmation of the country’s inspiring heritage, noting that Koshary is the eleventh Egyptian element and the first Egyptian dish to receive this global recognition.
Koshary, a popular staple of rice, pasta, and lentils, was recognized as far more than just a recipe. The nomination emphasized its role as a "living heritage" and a shared social tradition that unites Egyptians across generations and diverse backgrounds. The Minister indicated that Egypt plans to nominate more social and cultural practices to the UNESCO lists in the coming years.
