Egypt and the World Bank Group (WBG) discussed expanding cooperation on healthcare reform and accelerating the rollout of the country's Universal Health Insurance System during talks on Tuesday, as Cairo presses ahead with efforts to modernize its healthcare sector.

Deputy Minister of Health and Population Abla El-Alfy  met Sherin Varkey, the WBG's Regional Director for Health, Nutrition and Population, to review the progress of ongoing health projects and explore ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation, the Health Ministry said.

The discussions focused on the implementation of Egypt's comprehensive health system transformation project and the expansion of the Universal Health Insurance System, including its financing mechanisms, legislative framework and measures to ensure its long-term sustainability.

According to Health Ministry spokesperson Hossam Abdel Ghaffar, the two sides assessed the implementation status of current projects, reviewing progress rates, implementation timelines and financing arrangements with the aim of accelerating execution and achieving planned objectives.

The officials also confirmed the completion of the first phase of the Universal Health Insurance System in six governorates, with the programme continuing to expand gradually in line with the government's rollout plan.

Abdel Ghaffar said Egypt's healthcare reform programme is built on three main pillars: accelerating implementation, improving the quality and efficiency of healthcare services, and strengthening the resilience and sustainability of the health system through infrastructure development, public health initiatives and diversified financing models.

The meeting also examined Indonesia's experience in strengthening healthcare systems as part of Egypt's efforts to draw on international best practices in support of its health sector reform programme and its strategic partnership with the World Bank Group.
