Egypt is working to strengthen its cooperation with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) as it advances an ambitious initiative aimed at transforming rural communities into productive economic centers and creating new opportunities for farmers, women, and young people.

Agriculture Minister Alaa Farouk discussed the government's "Productive Village Revival" initiative with AbdulHakim Elwaer, the organization's regional representative for the Near East and North Africa, during talks focused on expanding cooperation and securing technical support for the program.

The initiative is designed to promote sustainable rural development by shifting villages from largely consumer-based communities to productive economic hubs capable of generating jobs, increasing household incomes and strengthening local economies.

According to Farouk, the program includes creating a unified brand for village products, establishing small-scale economic entities at the local level and diversifying sources of income in rural areas. It also seeks to improve environmental sustainability through waste recycling and more efficient use of resources.

The minister said the initiative places particular emphasis on enhancing the skills of rural youth and women, viewing them as key drivers of economic development in the countryside.

Other components of the plan include expanding contract farming and agricultural mechanization, improving livestock productivity through better breeds for small-scale farmers, and promoting industries such as silk production and beekeeping.

Farouk added that strengthening agricultural cooperatives is another pillar of the initiative, helping improve market access and economic empowerment, particularly for women.

Elwaer welcomed Egypt's vision for rural development and reaffirmed the organization's readiness to provide technical expertise and support to help ensure the initiative's long-term sustainability and success.

The discussions reflect Egypt's broader efforts to modernize its agricultural sector and stimulate economic activity in rural areas as part of a wider strategy to promote inclusive and sustainable development.
