Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty signed an agreement on Friday, 24 July, allowing five Egyptian agricultural products immediate access to the Philippine market.
The products covered by the agreement are grapes, onions, garlic, tomatoes and carrots.
The agreement was signed on the sidelines of the tenth round of political consultations between Egypt and the Philippines. For the first time since the mechanism was established, the consultations were held at foreign minister level, with Philippine Foreign Secretary Maria Theresa Lazaro leading her country’s delegation.
The two ministers said the agreement marked an important step towards expanding economic and commercial cooperation and opening a new stage of partnership in food security.
They said it would help increase bilateral trade and support the shared economic interests of both countries.
Egyptian and Philippine authorities are also coordinating to complete procedures allowing Egyptian potato exports to enter the Philippine market, with support from the Egyptian Embassy in Manila.
Efforts are continuing to increase Egyptian fertiliser exports, facilitate the registration of Egyptian medicines and dietary supplements, and expand exports of fabrics and cotton textiles.
Both sides affirmed their commitment to widening economic cooperation and increasing trade and investment between Egypt and the Philippines.
