Sinner & Djokovic Withdraw from Montreal Masters

World No. 1 Jannik Sinner and 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic have withdrawn from the upcoming National Bank Open in Montreal, Tennis Canada confirmed ahead of the ATP Masters 1000 tournament, which begins on 1 August.

The tournament will also be without seven-time Grand Slam champion Carlos Alcaraz, who was not included on the entry list as he continues to recover from a right wrist injury that forced him to miss both the French Open and Wimbledon.

Sinner, who claimed the Wimbledon title earlier this month, said the decision was made after careful consultation with his team.

"After carefully considering all the factors together with my team, we have made the difficult decision to withdraw from Montreal," Sinner said. "It is never easy to miss such an important event, but we believe this is the right decision to prioritize my health."

With the withdrawals, French Open champion and Wimbledon runner-up Alexander Zverev will be the tournament's top seed, while Canada's Félix Auger-Aliassime becomes the highest-seeded Canadian in the event's history.

Tournament director Valérie Tétreault expressed disappointment over the absence of the sport's biggest stars, noting that Sinner and Djokovic also skipped last year's edition in Toronto.

She said the repeated late withdrawals raise broader concerns for the ATP calendar, adding that Masters 1000 events are among the tour's flagship tournaments and fans expect to see the world's top players compete.

The National Bank Open was scheduled three weeks after Wimbledon this year in an effort to reduce player withdrawals, compared to the tighter schedule in 2025.

Sinner, Djokovic and Alcaraz are all expected to target a return at the Cincinnati Open, which begins immediately after the Montreal tournament, as part of their preparations for the US Open later in August.
