Egypt received about 338,800 doses of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine from Germany, Egypt’s Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research and Acting Minister of Health and Population announced on Saturday.

The shipment, which arrived at Cairo International airport, will be subject to analysis in the laboratories of the Egyptian Drug Authority before being distributed among vaccination centers across the Republic.

This comes under the Ministry of Health and Population’s plan to persify and expand the provision of coronavirus vaccines in order to preserve the gains of the state in addressing the pandemic.

It is worth mentioning that, on Friday, Egypt reported 2291 coronavirus cases, bringing the total infection tally up to 435,052 since the outbreak began in February 2020, the health ministry said.

The ministry also reported 39 new deaths in the past 24 hours nationwide, bringing the total fatalities nationwide to 22819.

The statement added that the total number of recoveries was 367026.

The recent spike in infections comes as Egypt continues to push ahead with efforts to expand its vaccination campaign to vaccinate 70 percent of the population by the second half of 2022 amid the outbreak of the omicron variant.
