Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Egyptians Abroad, Badr Abdelatty, met on Monday with Iraq’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein on the sidelines of the resumed 165th regular session of the Arab League Council in Amman.

The meeting focused on ways to strengthen bilateral relations between Egypt and Iraq, as well as exchanging views on current regional developments.

Abdelatty praised the deep historical and brotherly ties between the two countries, stressing Egypt’s commitment to expanding bilateral cooperation across various fields in a way that serves the common interests of both peoples.

He also underlined the importance of the trilateral cooperation mechanism between Egypt, Jordan and Iraq, describing it as a model for regional integration. He said the mechanism offers opportunities to make better use of the human and economic capabilities of the three countries and expand cooperation in areas of shared interest.

During the meeting, Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt’s firm position in support of Iraq’s unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity. He also stressed Cairo’s rejection of any external interference in Iraq’s internal affairs.

The Egyptian foreign minister said Egypt supports Iraqi state institutions in confronting political, economic and security challenges, adding that Iraq’s stability is a central pillar of Arab national security.

The two ministers also exchanged views on regional developments, particularly the course of US-Iranian negotiations following the memorandum of understanding recently reached between Washington and Tehran.
