Egypt marked the birthday of legendary singer Umm Kulthum, widely known as the “Star of the East,” with cultural tributes highlighting her enduring impact on Arab music and collective memory.

Born on Dec. 31, 1898, Umm Kulthum remains one of the most influential voices in the Arab world, with songs that transcended borders and generations, shaping modern Arabic music and national identity.

Mahmoud Al-Tamimi, an Egyptian journalist and writer, said Umm Kulthum’s legacy goes beyond music, describing her as “a unifying cultural force whose voice became part of the Arab world’s emotional and political history.” He noted that her work continues to inspire artists and audiences alike decades after her death.

Events marking the occasion included discussions, performances and renewed calls to preserve her artistic heritage, underscoring her status as a cultural icon whose influence remains deeply rooted in Egypt and across the region.
