Egypt Embarks on Renovation of Rashid National Museum

Egypt's Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, under the aegis of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, has initiated a pivotal project to restore and upgrade the Rashid National Museum. Located within the historically significant residence of Arab Keli, the former Governor of Rashid during the Ottoman period, the museum stands as a testament to the city's rich heritage.

Dr. Mustafa Waziri, Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, underscored the project's importance. He believes that this undertaking will not only enhance Rashid's touristic appeal but also resonate deeply with the denizens of Rashid and the broader Beheira Governorate.

The museum is a trove of artifacts, each narrating a chapter of the city's storied past, spanning multiple epochs. With this development, Dr. Waziri envisions a more immersive experience for both local and international visitors, perfectly aligning with Egypt's broader tourism development strategy.

Elaborating on the project's specifics, Mr. Momen Osman, Head of the Museum Sector at the Supreme Council of Antiquities, shared that the endeavor goes beyond mere structural refurbishment. Plans are in place to revamp the museum's narrative displays, fortify security, optimize lighting, and elevate the overall visitor experience. A key focus will also be enhancing accessibility for differently-abled patrons.

Mr. Said Rakha, General Manager of the Rashid National Museum, spotlighted some of the museum's prized possessions. These include a meticulous replica of the famed Rosetta Stone and exhibits that pay homage to Rashid's valiant stand against French and British colonial forces. Additionally, several artifacts unearthed from the Tel Abu Mandour archaeological site in Rashid find their home in the museum. Part of the establishment's ethos is its commitment to community engagement, prominently featuring the artisanal crafts that distinguish the city.

A historical tidbit of interest: The Rashid National Museum was first thrown open to the public by none other than the late President Gamal Abdel Nasser on September 19, 1959.

This day has since been earmarked as a celebratory occasion in the Beheira Governorate, honoring the resilience of Rashid's residents during the British campaign of 1807. Over the years, the museum has undergone several facelifts, with the 2009 expansion, including a sprawling museum park, being a significant milestone.
