Egypt is stepping up efforts to advance the development of Cyprus’s Aphrodite gas field, with officials working to finalize key commercial and technical agreements that would allow the field’s production to be transported to Egypt for processing and re-export, reinforcing the country’s position as a regional energy hub.

Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi met with Scott Childers, Vice President for Base Assets and Emerging Countries at Chevron, along with senior company representatives, to review progress on the project and discuss measures to accelerate its implementation.

The discussions focused on completing the framework agreements governing the field’s development, gas transportation and marketing arrangements, which are considered essential prerequisites for moving the project into its execution phase.

Badawi stressed Egypt’s full commitment to supporting the Aphrodite development and serving as a strategic partner in ensuring the project’s success.

He emphasized the importance of concluding the required agreements within the targeted timetable to facilitate the transition toward construction and production activities while delivering benefits for Egypt, Cyprus and the international investors participating in the field.

The project is designed to transport natural gas from the offshore Aphrodite field in Cyprus to Egypt through subsea infrastructure, where it can be processed using Egypt’s existing facilities before being exported to international markets.

During the meeting, attended by senior officials from the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS) and the Ministry of Petroleum, both sides agreed to intensify coordination efforts and accelerate the review of draft agreements with the aim of reaching final versions in the coming months.

According to participants, completing the core agreements by September is expected to represent a major milestone in the project’s timeline and could pave the way for a final investment decision.

Childers said the Aphrodite project is making solid progress on both technical and commercial fronts, highlighting advances in studies related to the floating production facility, offshore pipeline infrastructure, and the gas transportation and processing system.

He noted that finalizing the principal agreements remains a critical step toward securing approval for full-scale development and investment.

The two sides also explored opportunities to leverage the expertise and capabilities of Egyptian petroleum-sector companies in offshore fabrication, marine construction and engineering services to support the project’s implementation schedule.
