Ed Sheeran won his first Emmy Award for best original music and lyrics in a television show at the 2023 Creative Arts Emmys (which were delayed due to the writers and actors strikes last year).
The other nominees were tracks from Ginny & Georgia, The L Word: Generation Q, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Ted Lasso (nominated twice, only one of the songs being written by Sheeran), and Weird: The Al Yankovic Story.
This was the first Emmy nomination and first win for the “Perfect” and “Shape of You” singer-songwriter, who was not present at the Creative Emmy Awards Saturday to accept the statuette.
He shared the award for “A Beautiful Game” with his co-writing team, prolific hitmaker Max Martin and Foy Vance.
The trio’s Emmy-winning song, performed by Sheeran, was featured in the Ted Lasso finale “So Long, Farewell.”
Hours after the ceremony, Sheeran took to Instagram to celebrate.
“I was not expecting to win at all, it was a real real surprise waking up to the news, I wish I had been there but I’m just about to kick off the Asia tour so had to be elsewhere sadly,” he wrote next to video from the recording of “A Beautiful Game.”
He spoke about how he, Martin and Vance were approached by the team from Ted Lasso and how “A Beautiful Game” came together.
“We were all fans of the show and got asked to do a song for the finale, so 2 years ago this month we got in together and wrote a song about love and football, and how it is always about the journey rather than the destination. I recorded a crowd at one of my stadium shows for it singing the final chant to keep it in the footie wibes,” Sheeran said. ” It was up against some fantastic artists and songs in its Emmy category for Best Original Music and Lyrics, hence not thinking we had a chance in hell of winning, but thank you so much for whoever voted for it, and to Max, Foy and all the Lasso crew. I really am honoured.”
