Member states of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) signed an intergovernmental agreement on Sunday to join the Morocco-Nigeria Atlantic Gas Pipeline project, marking a major step toward implementing one of Africa's largest energy infrastructure initiatives.
The agreement was signed during the ECOWAS summit in Freetown and establishes the framework for developing the nearly 6,800-kilometer pipeline, designed to transport natural gas from Nigeria to Morocco before connecting with the European gas network.
The estimated $25 billion project is expected to cross 13 Atlantic coastal African countries and carry up to 30 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually. Around 15 billion cubic meters could be exported to Morocco and Europe, with the remainder supplying regional markets.
Originally launched by Morocco's King Mohammed VI and former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, the project aims to strengthen regional energy security, boost electricity generation, support industrial development and create an integrated West African gas market.
