SPOILER ALERT: This story contains spoilers for “Fast X,” now playing in theaters.
Following a surprise end credit return in "Fast X", Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson is ready to make his return to the "Fast & Furious" universe.
Universal is developing a new Fast and Furious movie starring Johnson as Luke Hobbs.
Johnson confirmed the news with a video on his social platforms which comes after he appeared in an end credit cameo reprising the role in "Fast X".
The scene features Hobbs talking to the villainous Dante Reyes, played by Jason Momoa. The clip hints at the two of them duking them out in the future.
The movie would be a continuation of that sequence that will bridge into a "Fast X: Part II".
While this movie is in development, sources close to the project add the door is also open for him to appear in the next installment of "Fast and Furious", which is also in development.
Insiders also add that this untitled movie is not a sequel or spin-off to "Hobbs & Shaw" but its a separate movie. The project is based on a screenplay by longtime "Fast and Furious" collaborator, Chris Morgan.
Johnson, Dany Garcia, and Hiram Garcia will produce for their Seven Bucks Productions alongside Vin Diesel and Samantha Vincent for their One Race Films. Also producing are Morgan for his Chris Morgan Productions, Jeff Kirschenbaum for Roth/Kirschenbaum Films, and Neal Moritz for Original Film.
Johnson made his debut in “Fast 5” playing Hobbs and was a part of the franchise through the 2017 movie “The Fate of the Furious”.
Johnson was last seen as Hobbs in the Fast & Furious series in "Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw".
The tenth chapter, "Fast X", opened No. 1 around the world earlier this month with $320 million and became the second biggest global opening of 2023. The movie opened No. 1 in all markets where it was released, including China. Fast X crossed $500 million in its second weekend with a healthy summer play period to come.
“Fast X” is being billed by Universal Pictures as the beginning of the end of the saga, which kicked off in 2001. The plan has long been to split the finale into two films, “Fast X” and the upcoming 11th installment.
In a recent interview, Diesel previously teased that the finale might be divided into three movies instead.
“Look how many characters and great talent there is in the movie. There was no way I can pull that off unless I had everyone on for five seconds. These characters are appealing and we need to see more of them,”.
