Amazon MGM Studios has finally unveiled the official trailer for the epic Christmas action-comedy movie “Red One,” starring Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans.
Per the official synopsis, “After Santa Claus (Simmons) – Code Name: ‘Red One’ – is kidnapped, the North Pole’s Head of Security (Johnson) must team up with the world’s most infamous bounty hunter (Evans) in a globe-trotting, action-packed mission to save Christmas.”
"Red One" is directed by Johnson’s Jumanji collaborator, Jake Kasdan, from a script penned by Fast & Furious and Hobbs & Shaw scribe Chris Morgan.
The pic was based on an original story by Hiram Garcia, president of production at Seven Bucks Productions.
It is described as a globe-trotting, four-quadrant action-adventure comedy, imagining a whole new universe to explore within the holiday genre.
The four-quadrant family movie, which has plans to be an extensive franchise with merchandising throughout the Amazon universe, boasts a cast that includes Lucy Liu, Kiernan Shipka, Kristofer Hivju, Nick Kroll, Mary Elizabeth Ellis, and Wesley Kimmel.
Oscar winner J.K. Simmons and Emmy nominee Bonnie Hunt have boarded respectively as Santa and Mrs. Claus.
Johnson described Red One in an Instagram post: “Our movie is a big, fun, action packed and fresh new take on Christmas. Think JUMANJI meets MIRACLE ON 34TH ST meets HOBBS & SHAW with a dash of HARRY POTTER and sprinkled on top with my all-time favorite Christmas movie, ITS A WONDERFUL LIFE…”
"Red One" is produced by Seven Bucks Productions’ Hiram Garcia, Johnson, and Dany Garcia, Chris Morgan Productions’ Chris Morgan, and The Detective Agency’s Jake Kasdan, and Melvin Mar. EPs are Barry Waldman and Chris Morgan Productions’ Ainsley Davies, with John Wildermuth and The Detective Agency’s Sky Salem Robinson co-producing.
Johnson will also produce the movie along with Hiram and Dany Garcia on behalf of Seven Bucks Productions.
Amazon Studios snapped up the project in a competitive bidding war. The project will stream in more than 240 countries and territories.
Warner Bros. Pictures is handling international as part of its distribution deal with Amazon MGM Studios.
Johnson revealed Monday the poster for “Red One”, which resembles a wanted poster for Simmons’ Santa. “All points alert to everyone around the world— be on the lookout for this man. Last seen at the North Pole. If you have any information, please reach out to the E.L.F. North Pole Command Center via the number on the bottom of this official ‘Red One’ poster. WE NEED YOUR HELP. Christmas depends on it. And Nick, buddy, if you’re reading this— I will find you. ~ Callum Drift, Commander of The E.L.F,” Johnson wrote.
"Red One" will have a global theatrical release on November 15 before streaming on its ultimate home, Prime Video.
With the November 15 release, Amazon MGM Studios is looking to take advantage of the traditionally lucrative holiday corridor before Thanksgiving. Rival wide releases include Warner Bros. Robert De Niro's mobster movie, "Alto Knights" and Lionsgate and Kingdom Story’s "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever".
