The runtime for Disney's upcoming live-action remake of “The Little Mermaid” has been revealed.
The movie will be 2 hours and 15 minutes long.
The live-action take on Disney’s 1989 animated musical classic will be expanding on the world and story audiences first experiences over three decades ago, with the 135-minute runtime breaking records for the length of Disney live-action remakes.
However, this is hardly a new concept for viewers either as the live-action remakes tended to increase their runtimes over their original counterparts, often bringing with them extended action sequences and expanded backstories for their leading characters.
“The Little Mermaid” stars Halle Bailey as Ariel, Javier Bardem as King Triton, Melissa McCarthy as Ursula, Daveed Diggs as Sebastian, Awkwafina as Scuttle, Jacob Tremblay as Flounder, Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric, and Noma Dumezweni as Queen Selina, a new character.
Director Rob Marshall helmed the remake from a script by Jane Goldman and David Magee. It will feature the original soundtrack with four new songs composed by Alan Menken and Lin-Manuel Miranda.
“The Little Mermaid” is produced by Miranda and Marshall alongside Marc Platt and Jon DeLuca.
Disney first announced Bailey to play Ariel in July 2019. It will also feature many of Alan Menken and Howard Ashman’s classic songs from the original 1989 movie, alongside new music from Menken and Moana composer Lin-Manuel Miranda.
The original “Little Mermaid” movie was based on the 1837 Danish fairytale of the same name by Hans Christian Andersen. It was written and directed by Ron Clements and John Musker, with music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Howard Ashman.
The voice cast included Jodi Benson, Christopher Daniel Barnes, Pat Carroll, Samuel E. Wright, Kenneth Mars, and Buddy Hackett.
It allocated $233 million globally and won two Academy Awards for Best Original Score and Best Original Song for “Under the Sea.”
“The Little Mermaid” will hit theaters on May 26.
