Death Stranding, the wildly popular 2019 action video game from creator Hideo Kojima, is coming to the big screen.
A24 is teaming with Kojima Productions to develop a live-action movie adaptation of the title, which has sold over five million copies and has a reputation as one of the best video games of the 21st century.
The official synopsis reads: “The film promises to delve into the mysteries surrounding the apocalyptic event called the ‘Death Stranding,’ which blurred the lines between life and death, and brought forth nightmarish creatures into a world on the brink of collapse.”
The announcement of the live-action movie comes just ahead of Kojima Productions’ eighth anniversary on December 16.
"Death Stranding" is set in the United States after a cataclysmic event unleashes destructive creatures onto the planet.
It features an all-star cast including Norman Reedus, Mads Mikkelsen, Léa Seydoux, Guillermo del Toro, and Margaret Qualley.
The video game challenges players to reconnect with a fractured society after the cataclysmic ‘Death Stranding’ event, which has opened a doorway between the living and the dead, leading to creatures from the afterlife roaming the fallen world marred by a desolate society.
Carrying the disconnected remnants of humanity’s future in his hands, players embody Reedus’ Sam Bridges as he embarks on a mission to deliver hope to humanity by connecting the last survivors of a decimated America.
The video game originally launched on November 8, 2019, on PlayStation 4. It has connected with more than 10 million worldwide since its launch. A director’s cut was released for PlayStation 5 in September 2021. A second game is currently in development.
