DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn announced that February 29 marked the start of production on his highly-anticipated “Superman” movie, which will kick off the rebooted DC Universe under the supervision of him and his DC Studios co-head Peter Safran.

Gunn — the writer-director of the pic — also revealed that the movie, which had been titled “Superman: Legacy,” is now simply called “Superman.”

“Overjoyed to be announcing the start of principal photography on SUPERMAN today, February 29, which just so happens to be – coincidentally and unplanned – Superman’s birthday,” Gunn wrote in a caption to a photo of a close-up of his version of the Superman costume.

He added, “When I finished the first draft of the script, I called the film ‘Superman: Legacy.’ By the time I locked the final draft, it was clear the title was SUPERMAN,” he added. “Making our way to you July 2025.”

The movie features David Corenswet playing the eponymous superhero, Emmy winner Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Superman’s infamous villain Lex Luthor.

It also stars Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillon as Guy Gardner, and Isabela Mercad as Hawkgirl.

“Superman” is set to hit theaters on July 11, 2025.
