As fans patiently wait for the first installment of James Gunn's revamped DC universe, the filmmaker has been making his intentions very clear.
With the American screenwriter, director, and producer spearheading the movies of the DC Universe, in partnership with producer Peter Safran, fans understandably want to know how far the boundary-pushing filmmaker will go.
Gunn and Safran were named co-chairs and co-CEOs of DC Studios in October 2022 and since then have been planning the new DC projects.
After the first of the movies, "Superman", starring David Corenswet, wrapped production all eyes were on the other projects from the new cinematic universe.
In a recent interview with Collider, the Guardians of the Galaxy director opened up about how the ratings of his future DC projects are looking.
Gunn confirmed that R-rated scripts and stories will be a part of the future of the DC cinematic franchise.
After having directed an acclaimed R-rated movie for DC, "The Suicide Squad", he told the publication that DC Studios is working on multiple R-rated projects.
With Gunn's stellar first R-rated DC project won adult fans with its on-screen violence, which he continued in the HBO series "Peacemaker" starring John Cena, audiences are expecting Gunn not to hold back on the intensity as long as the narrative requires it, of course. The director won't limit himself to audience reactions, either.
"We're not about that. We're not about 'See how it does.' We've got one opportunity to take these characters and really press forward and do what we believe," he said. "I am a great believer that if we tell good, authentic stories if a movie does well or doesn't do as well, if you keep with that same philosophy, that you're going to build a universe that people are going to love and want to be a part of for a long time."
Although audiences got a sneak peek at DC's on-screen Justice League in "Peacemaker", fans are going to have to wait longer than expected for a superhero team-up movie, as Gunn has admitted they have not begun planning for the project. However, "Superman" will be hitting theaters on July 11, 2025, and "Creature Commandos" will premiere on Max on December 5.
