Secretary-general of Supreme Council of Antiquities Dr. Moustafa Waziri, Qena governor Major General Abdel Hamid al Hagan and Kerles, Bishop of Nag Hammadi inaugurated on Sunday 'St. Badaba Monastery' after a comprehensive restoration project.
The whole monastery has undergone a comprehensive restoration process (careful - architectural) since 2014, under the supervision of the projects sector in cooperation with the sector of Islamic, Coptic and Jewish antiquities.
Eng. Waad Abul Ela, head of the projects sector, said that the restoration works included three churches. The foundations of the churches were reinforced, and the missing upper part was completed with the same quality as the bricks on the walls, according to Abul Ela.
Moreover, he added that some walls inside and outside the churches, as well as the archaeological well inside the monastery had been thoroughly restored; the dilapidated toilet building was replaced by a new one.
On his part, Atef al-Dabbah, Waziri’s technical office director, said that the monastery is registered among the Islamic, Coptic and Jewish antiquities in accordance with ministerial decree no. 309 of 1992.
The monastery belongs to St. Badaba Monastery', bishop of Qift, who was martyred in the Diocletian Persecution between 311-303 AD.
The monastery is located on a relatively high hill; it occupies a rectangular area with three churches in the center including; St. Badaba church, Saint Mary church, and Martyr Cedars Church.
