Egypt's military court on Wednesday sentenced terrorist Hesham Ashmawy to death for involvement in numerous terrorist attacks across the country.

Ashmawy was involved in the assassination of top prosecutor Hisham Barakat and other attacks including Al-Wahat terror assault, which lead to the death of 16 Egyptian security personnel.

He was also found guilty for attempting to assassinate former interior minister Mohamed Ibrahim, plotting to target ships crossing the Suez Canal, as well as helping a member of the Ansar Beit al-Maqdis terrorist group escape from a government hospital in Ismailia.

According to the court, Ashmawy collaborated with other terrorists and targeted several security buildings using car bombs in several governorates as well as a border checkpoint in the Farafra oasis in western Egypt, killing many army personnel.

The terrorist was also convicted of leading a terrorist group and opening fire on several military vehicles of the Second Field Army, killing at least 13 soldiers.

The Libyan National Army handed over the terrorist Ashmawy to Egyptian forces following the visit of the Director of the Egyptian General Intelligence Directorate (GIS) Abbas Kamel to Libya last May.
