Coronavirus: Egyptian Students, Parents Call for School Suspension

Egyptian citizens called, Saturday, for suspending school year over fears of the rising number of Coronavirus infections.

Students and parents called on Higher Education Ministry, and Ministry of Education to close universities and schools, asking for suspending the school year.

They wrote hashtags, in which they note that their lives are more valuable than study, claiming that it can be suspended until this pandemic ends.

Students in Egypt quickly interacted with the hashtag, which made it reach over 100,000 tweets within a few hours.

On his part, Egypt’s Higher Education Ministry responded to the recently circulated reports about the suspension of universities and the postponement of second semester exams for two weeks, according to Sputnik news agency.

In an official statement, the ministry said, ‘”The viral decision about universities’ suspension and converting all university hospitals into quarantine hospitals is completely baseless.”

Moreover, the ministry confirmed, “It has taken all legal measures against the promoters of these rumors.”

It’s noteworthy that Egypt saw on Friday a rise in the daily coronavirus cases, confirming 1,113 new infections, raising the total cases to 130,126 since the beginning of the virus outbreak.

“Forty-nine more deaths were confirmed; raising the total number to 7,309,” Khaled Megahed, the Health Ministry’s spokesman, said in a statement.

“Up to 108,985 coronavirus patients have recovered so far,” the spokesman said.

“As many as 511 Egyptians were among the recovered patients today,” he added.
