Oscar-winning actor Cillian Murphy is set to return for Danny Boyle’s long-awaited project  “28 Years Later”.

Speaking to Deadline, Sony Motion Pictures Group chairman Tom Rothman said Murphy would be back for the first film in the zombie franchise’s new trilogy and vaguely teased that he would be involved “in a surprising way and in a way that grows.”

Rothman also described the project as Boyle's being “at his best, combined with a very commercial genre, like we had with Edgar Wright and Baby Driver.”

Rothman also emphasized the that movie is “Not in any way a literal sequel.”

The long-awaited project is set to premiere on June 20, 2025.

Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Ralph Fiennes are set to star in the follow-up to “28 Days Later” and “28 Weeks Later.”

Plot details are still being kept under wraps for the new screenplay, written by Alex Garland.

Boyle and Garland are producing, as is original producer Andrew Macdonald and Peter Rice.

Bernie Bellew is also producing. Murphy is also serving as an executive producer.

“28 Days Later” was released in 2002 and starred a largely unknown Murphy as a bike courier who discovers the release of contagious virus upon awaking from a coma.

Boyle directed the pic from a script by Garland. The sequel, “28 Weeks Later,” was released in 2007.
