Chad has officially announced its withdrawal from the International Criminal Court (ICC), notifying the UN Secretary-General of its decision to leave the Rome Statute.
The Chadian government said the court had become a politicized institution that disproportionately targets African countries and the Global South, arguing that its work lacks balance and effectiveness.
The decision follows a review of the ICC's record since its establishment in 2002, with Chad saying it intends to strengthen justice and human rights through national and regional mechanisms instead.
Under Article 127 of the Rome Statute, the withdrawal will take effect one year after the UN receives Chad's formal notification. However, the country will remain bound by any investigations or proceedings initiated before its exit becomes effective.
Chad is the fifth country in recent weeks to announce its departure from the ICC, following similar moves by Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso, while Venezuela has also begun the withdrawal process.
The announcement comes amid turmoil at the Hague-based court after member states voted to remove ICC Prosecutor Karim Khan over misconduct allegations.
