The 46th Cairo International Film Festival (CIFF) has spotlighted the growing cultural and cinematic partnership between Egypt and China, according to Hussein Fahmy, the festival’s president and veteran Egyptian actor.
In an interview with Xinhua, Fahmy praised the strong Chinese presence at the festival, calling it “very important” for both cinematic dialogue and bilateral cooperation.
Chinese cinema made a notable impact at this year’s festival, held November 12‑21 at the Cairo Opera House.
"The Botanist", directed by Jing Yi, won the Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema Award for Best Asian Feature Film and received a Special Mention from the International Critics’ Week jury. The China Global Television Network (CGTN) documentary *Cherished Land* was also featured in the International Panorama section.
Renowned Chinese director Guan Hu served on the International Competition jury and was honored with the CIFF Lifetime Achievement Golden Pyramid Award at the closing ceremony.
Fahmy highlighted ongoing collaboration between Egypt and China, pointing to a 2024 cooperation agreement between CIFF and China Media Group, as well as strengthened ties with China’s Golden Panda Awards during his recent trip to Chengdu.
Chinese expertise has also contributed to Egypt’s film infrastructure, including restoration work at the Media Production City and the use of Chinese-made equipment to maintain production standards.
“Different cultures matter to us, especially Chinese culture, which is ancient and rich in traditions,” Fahmy said. “Exposing Egyptian audiences to Chinese films enriches the cultural dialogue and fosters better understanding.”
Looking ahead, Fahmy predicted Chinese cinema will continue to grow globally. “China is a very advanced country with remarkable capabilities, and its cinema is expanding and will gain an even greater position worldwide,” he said.
Founded in 1976, CIFF is the oldest internationally accredited film festival in the Arab world and remains one of the region’s most prestigious cinematic events.
