Canadian music icon Celine Dion released her first music months after being diagnosed with a rare neurological disorder known as Stiff Person Syndrome that forced her to postpone a world tour.
Dion dropped Thursday the song “Love Again” from the upcoming Screen Gems movie Love Again, starring Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Sam Heughan, and Dion — in her first-ever film role.
Dion isn’t the only singer starring in the movie, Chopra's husband, singer-actor Nick Jonas, makes a cameo in the movie.
The movie is directed by Jim Strouse, who also co-wrote it alongside Lauryn Kahn. It is based on the 2016 German movie “SMS Fur Dich”, which was based on a novel of the same name, published in 2009 by Sofie Cramer.
The plot revolves around a woman (Chopra Jonas) who begins to send “romantic text messages” to her deceased fiancé's old cell phone, but little did she know, that the number has been reassigned to Rob Burns’ new work phone (Heughan), who is suffering from similar heartbreak.
Rob, a journalist, is captivated by the honesty in the beautifully confessional texts. When he’s assigned to write a profile on the Canadian music icon, he enlists her help on how to meet Mira in person and win her heart.
"Love Again" features 11 Dion songs: five new songs and six of her past hits — including “That’s The Way It Is” and “It’s All Coming Back to Me Now” — as well as three of the film’s score selections.
The movie will open in theaters on May 5 and the film’s soundtrack will be released on May 12. The new songs mark the acclaimed singer's first new music since her 2019 album “Courage.”
“I had a lot of fun doing this movie. And to have the privilege of appearing with the beautiful and talented actors Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Sam Heughan in my very first feature film is a gift that I will cherish forever,” Dion said in a statement.
She added, “I think it’s a wonderful feel-good story, and I hope that people will like it, and like the new songs too.”
In December, the Grammy-winning icon revealed she had been diagnosed with stiff person syndrome, which causes spasms that affect her ability to walk and sing. It forced her to postpone and cancel the dates of her Courage World Tour.
“Unfortunately, the spasms affect every aspect of my daily life, sometimes causing difficulties when I walk and not allowing me to use my vocal cords to sing the way I’m used to. It hurts me to tell you today this means I won’t be ready to restart my tour in Europe in February.” she shared at the time.
Dion added that her team of doctors was working to build back her strength and ability to perform again.
“I have a great team of doctors working alongside me to help me get better and my precious children who are supporting me and giving me hope,” she said months ago.
“All I know is singing, it’s what I’ve done all my life and it’s what I love to do the most.”
