Two-time Oscar winner Cate Blanchett will star in the live-action “How to Train Your Dragon 2” as Valka, reprising the role she voiced in the original animated franchise.

“How to Train Your Dragon” follows the adventures of a scrawny misfit teen named Hiccup, who befriends an injured dragon he calls Toothless — a bond that defies centuries of tradition, where Vikings and dragons have long been bitter enemies.

The sequel is set five years later and follows a 20-year-old Hiccup and pals as they encounter Valka, who is Hiccup’s long-lost mother, and battle a madman who wants to conquer the world with a dragon army.

Blanchett will be joined in “How to Train Your Dragon 2” by Mason Thames, Nico Parker, Gerard Butler, Julian Dennison, Gabriel Howell, Bronwyn James, and Harry Trevaldwyn.

Dean DeBlois is writing and directing the sequel, having previously steered the animated trilogy of 2014’s “How to Train Your Dragon 2” and 2019’s “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World” to $1.6 billion.

He also helmed the 2025 live-action remake, which earned $646 million at the global box office to stand as the fourth-largest Hollywood release of the year.

Universal and DreamWorks have scheduled the live-action “How to Train Your Dragon 2” for a June 11, 2027, theatrical release.

On its current release date, “How to Train Your Dragon 2” will open a week after Sony’s animated “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.”
