Thirty-five years after Ridley Scott’s movie "Thelma & Louise" premiered in Cannes on May 20, 1991, the duo is back again to the Croisette as heroines on the official poster.
The official 2026 Cannes Film Festival poster is out and features Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon in character as the title duo on the set of "Thelma & Louis".
The black-and-white image sees the pair looking out from their droptop ’66 T-Bird, complete with pistol in Thelma’s back pocket.
As the press notes say, these two unforgettable fighters turned the tables and shattered a few gender stereotypes, both societal and cinematic; they embodied absolute freedom and unwavering friendship; they showed the way to emancipation when it becomes vital. Remembering this today means celebrating the road already covered without overlooking what still remains ahead.
The MGM film followed pals Thelma (Davis) and Louise (Sarandon), who hit the road after Louise shoots dead a man who attacked Thelma outside a bar. Cinema’s first female and feminist road movie plays out until the famous final scene at the Grand Canyon.
Thelma & Louise screened Out of Competition at Cannes, became a box office hit, and went on to score six Oscar noms including Best Actress for both leads, winning Best Original Screenplay for Callie Khouri. Harvey Keitel, Michael Madsen, and Christopher McDonald also starred, with a memorable breakout turn by Brad Pitt.
The 2026 Cannes Film Festival runs May 12-23 in the French resort city. Check out the poster below:
