Maria Callas, an American-born Greek soprano, is widely regarded as one of the greatest opera singers of the 20th century.
She was born on December 2nd, 1923, and passed away on September 16th, 1977. Her repertoire ranged from classical opera seria to the bel canto operas of Donizetti, Bellini, and Rossini, and further to the works of Verdi and Puccini, and in her early career to the music dramas of Wagner.
As her birth centenary approaches, Greece is preparing for large celebrations across its cities and internationally.
