Cairo Air Quality Improves Sharply as Egypt Expands Pollution Control Measures

Air quality in Cairo recorded a significant improvement during the first half of 2026, with concentrations of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) falling by 57% between January and June, according to data from Swiss air quality monitoring company IQAir.

The decline represents the capital's strongest improvement since the beginning of the year and coincides with a series of government initiatives aimed at reducing air pollution and expanding environmental monitoring across Egypt.

Authorities have accelerated efforts to improve air quality by expanding the national air quality monitoring network to 123 stations nationwide, strengthening programs to combat the seasonal "black cloud" phenomenon, and implementing broader emissions reduction measures.

As part of the country's transition toward cleaner transportation, the government has contracted 100 electric buses for Cairo's Public Transport Authority and an additional 20 electric buses for the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system. Officials are also promoting sustainable urban mobility through the expansion of pedestrian pathways and cycling infrastructure to encourage alternatives to private vehicle use.

In a further step toward enhancing environmental oversight, Egypt has introduced advanced monitoring equipment capable of measuring both conventional air pollutants and greenhouse gases at 12 monitoring stations across Greater Cairo, the first deployment of its kind in the metropolitan area. The new technology is expected to improve the accuracy of pollution monitoring and support evidence-based environmental policymaking.

The latest data suggest that these combined initiatives are contributing to measurable improvements in urban air quality while supporting the government's broader strategy to reduce emissions and improve public health.
